POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: ReFresh Community Outreach Coordinator

Type: Part-time, approximately 20 hours a week. Requires a relatively flexible schedule with some work on weekends and evenings

Employment Period: March 15, 2018 – March 15, 2019, with the possibility of extending term and responsibilities

Salary:Annual gross starting salary ranging from $20,000 - $25,000, commensurate with experience

About the ReFresh Project

The ReFresh Project is an innovative Community Health Hub located on N. Broad Street in New Orleans. Developed by Broad Community Connections (BCC), the Refresh Project houses BCC’s offices, Whole Foods Market Broad Street, the Tulane Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine at Tulane University, Liberty’s Kitchen, FirstLine Schools, Edible Schoolyard NOLA, SPROUT NOLA, the Crescent City Community Land Trust, and Boys Town. In addition to these on-site partners, BCC convenes a group of over 60 local organizations called the ReFresh Coalition. ReFresh Coalition partners represent a holistic approach to community health and wellness and include gardeners, housing advocates, medical professionals, community leaders, fitness instructors, academic institutions, and more. Under BCC’s leadership, the ReFresh Coalition works to achieve health equity in neighborhoods surrounding the ReFresh Project through combined community outreach efforts, advocacy, and collaborative health and wellness programming. Current collaborative programming includes free gardening, nutrition and culinary courses, an annual ReFresh Kids Camp, and free community events.

About the Community Engagement Coordinator Position

The ReFresh Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) will be integral to the success of the ReFresh Project and its efforts to achieve health equity in the Broad Street communities. The CEC will be in charge of a range of activities and will have the opportunity to shape how ReFresh engages and works with community at all levels. The ideal ReFresh CEC candidate is self-motivated, confident implementing their own creative ideas, and very comfortable operating outside of an office. They are a natural connector and passionate about building relationships with a diverse array of people. The ideal candidate is able to keep a larger vision in mind while navigating through detail, has a healthy sense of humor and empathy, and has a strong commitment to social justice.

Main Areas of Work

Develop Community Partnerships Based in Equity: Identify, engage and develop strong relationships with community leaders, community-led and community-serving organizations.

Inform Community Members of Existing Health & Wellness Resources: Design diverse outreach strategies and lead all outreach efforts. Build relationships with community members and link people to relevant leadership opportunities, resources, and advocacy efforts.

Help Develop ReFresh Programming and Initiatives: Work with core ReFresh partners and community members to form collaborative health and wellness programming, community engagement initiatives, and advocacy agendas.

Facilitate Community Leadership in Programming: Work with community leaders to develop and fundraise for community-led events that engage a diverse array of neighbors. Work with the ReFresh Director and other core ReFresh partners to develop decision-making structures and protocol that ensure equity in decision-making processes for all ReFresh work

Ideal Competencies

  • A deep connection with, respect for, and commitment to the Broad Street community and all of its diverse neighborhoods and cultures
  • Community organizing or outreach experience (formal or informal)
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, particularly regarding race and class issues
  • Ability to communicate easily with a diverse array of people
  • Experience developing agendas and facilitating meetings
  • Strategic thinker regarding partner and program development
  • Ability to move forward in work without waiting on explicit direction
  • Experience using social media and other internet platforms
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator
  • An Associate’s degree or equivalent community experience
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred but not required
