Nate and Joe Burgess, owners of Redbeard Cycles, opened their doors in August to serve the New Orleans motorcycle community. Located one block off Broad Street at Orleans and White, the brothers specialize in minor to major motorcycle repair and custom modifications on all makes and models of motorcycles and scooters, and sell parts, accessories, and clothing. They also hope to make Redbeard Cycles a used motorcycle dealer in 2014.
The shop has been 20 years in the making, according to Nate, who was the first to get into the motorcycle business through working at a Harley dealership. After completing college at Tulane, Joe started working with his brother, and the two have gained over 40 years combined dealership management experience, including managing service and parts departments and a Harley dealership in Gretna, and helping to open the Eagle Rider store on Canal Street nearby.
“They’re honest and hard-working people who know their craft and like what they do. On my part as a customer, they treat you honestly and correctly,” said friend and customer of six years Mike Centineo, who often drops by the shop just to visit with Nate and Joe as they work on bikes. “They can do whatever needs to be done from scratch to top.”
True to the shop’s name, Nate and Joe have maintained red facial hair for years, sometimes with mustaches and goatees, and even during Nate’s time spent in the Marine Corps. The name for the shop just kept coming back up, Nate said.
The building was set to become storage, but a friend of Joe’s owns the building and the renters fell through. The brothers had hoped to operate out of Mid-City to maintain their customer base established on Canal Street. The place isn’t as large as they had originally hoped, but has worked out quite well, Nate said.
Redbeard Cycles is located at 2762 Orleans Avenue and is open from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.
