The Aftermath Barber and Beauty Salon was named for its formation after Hurricane Katrina by a group of co-workers from another salon that closed down after the storm. All of the old shop's employees came together to start the Aftermath, led by owner Akil Mitchell, and many have since started their own businesses.
Mitchell's second-floor shop on Bayou Road; a bright yellow, orange, and brown room decorated with a variety of masks and flags; houses four haircut stations surrounded by mirrors, classic barbershop hairdryers, and plenty of customers stopping by to for a cut and a chat with their stylists. At his station, Mitchell keeps six clippers, a large collection of hairsprays, and photos of his children, who he says keep him young. He emphasizes that customers at Aftermath come for the atmosphere and their relationship with him.
Mitchell said he loves his Bayou Road location because he is surrounded by other businesses and everyone gets along. The salon specializes in haircuts, shampoo and conditioning, therapeutic facials, eyebrows, and shaves.
Aftermath Barber and Beauty Salon is located at 2563 Bayou Road, off North Broad Street.
